Just 20 minutes from Bodega Cafe, Cahir Castle is one of Ireland’s largest and best-preserved castles — and it’s a brilliant spot for a family day out.

Set right on the River Suir in the town of Cahir, this 12th-century fortress is not only steeped in history, but also incredibly scenic. With towers to climb, stone walls to explore, and even the odd goose waddling past, it’s a proper adventure for kids and grown-ups alike.

The castle is open all year round (except from December 24–31), and you can explore at your own pace or join one of the many guided tours offered throughout the day.

Family-Friendly & Full of Character

Cahir Castle is great for children — there’s plenty of space to roam and lots to climb, including spiral staircases and tall towers. For young explorers, it’s the perfect mix of fun and history.

Entry is easy on the budget too — just €5 per adult, €3 per child, or €13 for a family ticket.

Even if you’ve been before, there’s always something new to discover, with areas regularly reopened and updated for visitors.

Nature & Nearby Sights

Surrounding the castle, you’ll find a grassy green area full of wildflowers during the summer, and just down the road is the Swiss Cottage — another gem worth visiting. You can walk there in about 20 minutes or take a short drive.
