Just 30 minutes up the road from Bodega Cafe, you’ll find one of Ireland’s most iconic landmarks — the Rock of Cashel. Set high above the town of Cashel in County Tipperary, this dramatic site is packed with history, legends, and stunning views. If you’re looking to make a proper day of it while you’re in the area, this is a must-see.

The Rock of Cashel isn’t a castle (though it certainly looks like one from a distance). It’s actually a group of ancient buildings that includes a 12th-century round tower, a Romanesque chapel, a Gothic cathedral, and a medieval graveyard, all surrounded by historic stone walls.

History, Legends & High Kings

The site was once the seat of the Kings of Munster, and in 977 AD, Brian Boru was crowned here before becoming High King of Ireland.

It’s also tied to St. Patrick, who, according to legend, came to Cashel and converted the local king to Christianity — accidentally driving his staff through the king’s foot in the process!

In 1101, the Rock was gifted to the Church and became a major religious centre for centuries.

Cormac’s Chapel & Conservation

One of the highlights of the site is Cormac’s Chapel, built in the 1100s. It’s a rare example of Romanesque architecture and is home to the only surviving Romanesque frescoes in Ireland. Due to its age and sandstone construction, the chapel has undergone serious conservation work and is now only open to a limited number of visitors each day.

The Rock Through Conflict

The Rock of Cashel also saw darker times. In the 1600s, during the Cromwellian wars, the site was attacked by English Parliamentarian forces. Much of the building was destroyed, and many people seeking shelter there were killed. Today, the ruins remain as a powerful reminder of Ireland’s turbulent past.
