Underground Wonders — A Visit to Mitchelstown Caves

Looking for something a bit different to do in the area? Just 35 minutes from Bodega Cafe, the Mitchelstown Caves offer an unforgettable underground experience that’s ideal for both curious adults and wide-eyed kids.

Tucked away near the border of Tipperary and Cork, these caves are one of the largest and most impressive cave systems open to the public in Ireland — and they’re well worth a visit if you’re in the mood for something off the beaten path.

What to Expect

Discovered in 1833 by a local farmer, the Mitchelstown Caves are a natural limestone cave system featuring dramatic stalactites, stalagmites, and vast underground chambers. The guided tour takes you through well-lit paths, where you’ll hear the story of the cave’s discovery, geology, and local folklore.

The highlight is the Tower of Babel, a massive column formed over thousands of years where a stalactite and stalagmite met in the middle. The acoustics in the largest chamber are so good that it’s even been used for live music performances.

A Bit of a Walk — But Worth It

There are about 90 steps down into the cave, so while the path is safe and well-maintained, it’s best suited to visitors who are comfortable on their feet. The cave is naturally cool, even in summer, so bring a jacket — and maybe your sense of adventure too.

Tours are led by knowledgeable guides and last about 45 minutes. No need to book ahead for smaller groups, just check in at the entrance and you’re good to go.
